It is possible to bend sheets by means of cold or hot bending. The method used depends on the material and the requested quality.
Bending of plastic sheets is suitable for technical items like aprons and screening, as well as promotional items such as sales displays and cases.
Hot bending includes heating the plastic sheet until it is soft, bent and fixed during cooling. The plastic will then stay in shape. During hot bending, the material is not damaged and the strength remains the same, as if the material was moulded into shape.
All types of thermo plastic are principally suitable for hot bending, but some types are more suitable than others. PA oxides during heating and it can be difficult to hit the right temperature for PEHD 1000.
At Induflex, we mainly use acrylic, PEHD 500 and PC for hot bending.
The process of cold bending of plastic sheets is the same as bending metal, but since plastic is a "vivid" material than metal, it causes more problems.
Tensions arise during bending and the sheet may straighten out. However, cold bending is quicker and more favourable than hot bending. Cold bending is further possible with more types of polyester.
Typical materials for cold bending are PEHD and PC. Acrylic is not suitable for cold bending.
